Our season opener is a tribute to the powerful and expressive Russian music of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Prokofiev's "Marche" from the opera Love for Three Oranges begins a sonic journey through the many regions and eras of what we now call Russia. Stops along the way include pieces from Stravinsky, Glière and the original work for concert band by American Patrick Wilson entitled "Russian Impressions."
The second half of the program will be the full concert band transcription of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" (Картинки с выставки – Воспоминание о Викторе Гартмане). This work is an exhilarating exercise in the differing timbres of the wind and percussion instruments. The expressive qualities of the solo instruments and the dynamic intensity of the full ensemble brings the paintings of Vicktor Hartmann to life on the concert stage and is a fitting end to the concert.
